Is Hamilton the next Schumacher?

Some say he is the next Michael Schumacher. Some say he has the characteristics to be the next Schumacher. But for me there was and will be only one Schumi just like there was only one Ayrton Senna. Well, I am obviously talking about the much hyped future of F1, Lewis Hamilton.

The Brit driver has taken the world by storm and the comparisons are inevitable, just like they were when Schumi ruled the circuit. But as a person (like many in this world) who started recognizing the sport because of Schumi and not the other way round (before I started following the sport), likening Hamilton to the record 7 time world champion is annoying. Although the 22 yr old has done enough to prove he has the makings of a great driver (8 podium finishes in 8 races in debut season), his journey has just begun and he obviously has a long way to go. I would however agree that the Brit driver has added spice and competitive edge to a sport which many including me thought would decline post the Schumi era.

But, one thing that crosses my mind is that Senna died in a car crash the same year (1994) when Schumi won his first drivers’ championship (Senna had won the championship in 1991 when the German driver made his debut). We were surely deprived of what could have been a great battle between two champion drivers for whom nothing mattered more, than winning. And again Schumi retired just a season before Hamilton made his debut.

Is this a mere co-incidence or destiny? Well, destiny I say, because maybe Senna died so that a Schumacher could be born and Schumi retired so that a Hamilton could be born. So, maybe, just maybe, Hamilton is not meant to be the next Schumi, but in the league of extraordinary gentlemen comprising the likes of Senna and Schumi. And, may be, just may be, my prediction may come true!

even i believe hamilton is destined for amazing things in F1.

btw...he was sponsored at the age of 13 by Ron Dennis. When 10 years old, lewis went up to Dennis and said he wants to race for his team someday....this is the stuff that legends are made of!

Faster than kimi...better than alonso...hamilton is not only the next schumacher...he is the next fangio :)

Dear himanshu and other readers,

Hamilton may have had a dream start to his f1 career…but …it’s too early to compare him to Fangio or even Schumi… just like… u cant judge a person’s nature in the first encounter…the same way u should not compare him to the Great’s of the game…
No doubt that Hamilton is good or rather brilliant… Even schumi didn’t have a start like this….but still I think not only will hami... have to win this years championship …but also succesfully defend it.
Here I want to tell u that I am a big time admirer of hami…but still plz don’t compare …atleast not now.

The biggest foe of hami…would not be any driver…but the gigantic expectations of his fans…just imagine the hue and cry if hami…fails to get a podium finish for 2 consecutive races…media will start speculating hami’s end…
Let the kid relax…. I will rather say that he should finish 5th or 6th in a race …b’coz one should taste defeat if he/she wants to cherish victory.

I really hope that Alonso gives hami a good fight…not that iam alonso’s fan…but b’coz I don’t want any hami critic blaming lack of competition for hami’s victories.

Sanu (a Hami fan)

not debating or anything (since we both are hamilton fans and we both agree he is damn good)...but its never too early or too late to compare (though i myself always believe you can't compare two race drivers properly unless they have the same car)

didnt we all say it was too early to compare schumi with fangio...didnt we all say it was too early to say he might get the record for championships.

hamilton has had a dream rookie season...yes its possible his dream career might be cut short...but its equally possible that he might just join the hall of fame.

I dont know if he will turn out in the league of senna or fangio or schumi...i dont even know if he will ever win a championship...but...a guy who crashes at 185mph during his first f1 ride...and comes back to race after just a week...a guy who can overshadow alonso and the entire ferrari (i am a die-hard ferrari fan btw) team...deserves a lot of respect.

And yes...as of now...i am not comparing his entire f1 career with fangio/alonso/schumi...just his rookie season :)

P.S - I am an out and out ferrari fan...but this is the first time (in prob a decade or more)...that i want a non-ferrari driver to win.

I am impressed with your observation. I wonder when will we see two champion drivers fighting neck and neck battles.

Although Alonso has proved his mettle, he cannot be counted as one of the top drivers who can have a fan-following as strong as that of Schumi, or for now like that of Hamilton.

I guess we'll have to continue watching 'one man show'. First there was Senna, then there was Schumi, and now Hamilton.
